William Calvin Gill passed away peacefully on the evening of January 9, 2024, at Angel Bright Hospice, Corpus Christi, Texas at the age of 96 years old.
Calvin was born in Bee County, Texas on August 22, 1927, to James Monroe Gill and Della Williams Malone. He spent his early years in Runge, Texas, and Three Rivers, Texas. In the early 1940’s the family moved to San Antonio, Texas where, at the young age of 17 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during WWII. He served on the YMS-218 as well as the YMS-238, attaining the rank of Seaman Second Class. Upon his return. He continued his education to obtain his diploma from Brackenridge High School, San Antonio, Texas. He then began his 40-year career in sales with Southwestern Bell Telephone from which he retired in 1986. After retirement, he obtained his real estate license and sold land for developments as well as obtaining right-of-ways for the oil industry.
Calvin married Beverly Padgett Stewart on August 25, 1990, and they lived a long wonderful life together for 34 years. They traveled the US and even took their “trip of a lifetime” to Australia in 2014 with grandchildren Stacey and Bart McLeroy. Calvin enjoyed building, crafting, and creating in his workshop. He also enjoyed fishing and tending his garden He worked outdoors and mowed his grass into his 90’s He loved boating and for several years they spent 6 months of each year on the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, and made many new friends. Calvin was an avid dancer and loved Country and Western music, movies, books, and attire. His favorite song to dance to with his wife was “Waltz Across Texas”. Many of his friends were musicians and they always managed to play his favorite song.
Calvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was affectionately known as Papa and Pop-Pop by his great-grandchildren. They loved to follow him around as he was working on projects or doing yard work while he taught them how to help.
Calvin is preceded in death by his father, James Monroe Gill, his mother, Della Williams Malone, his siblings, James Monroe Gill, Jr. and Winnie Lee Sprott, as well as his great-grandchild Wyatt Gill.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Beverly Padgett Gill, and his siblings, Mary Dell Witten and Theodore (Teddy) Gill. Teddy then passed away 9 days after Calvin. He is also survived by his children William (Billy) Gill, Jr. Wayne Gill and wife Kim, Gay Lance and husband Michael, his wife’s children, Debbie Reiter and husband Steve, Wayne Stewart and wife Laura and Johnny Stewart. He is survived by his 16 grandchildren, including Lori Gill Moreno, Robert Gill and wife, Logan, Tate Gill, Stacey McLeroy and husband Bart, Stephen Reiter and wife Samantha, Christopher Perkins and wife, Taylor, Nicole Stewart, Justin Stewart and wife Chelsea and Noah Stewart along with 22 great-grandchildren including Ella Moreno, Bently Moreno, Effie Gill, Ashton Gill, Wesson Gill, Wynnlan Gill, Logan Mikeal, Trinity Callaway, Lane Stewart, Naomi Stewart, Janessa Stewart, Justice Stewart, Miracle Stewart, Blayke Dabbs, Dylan Reiter, Paityn Reiter, Chase Wheeler, Travis Perkins, Isabella Mackey, Elijah Hannah, Garrett Slaunwhite, Emma Slaunwhite, Zachariah Stewart and Brendan Stewart. He is missed greatly by his 4-legged baby, Susie, with whom he had coffee and vanilla wafers every morning.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren Tate Gill, Robert Gill, Christopher Perkins, Justin Stewart, and great-grandchildren Logan Mikeal and Trinity Callaway.
We will miss and remember him dearly, but we know he is able to dance again and do everything he was unable to do in the last few years of his life.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 3 to 6 PM at Sawyer George Funeral Home and Funeral Service will be held on January 29, 2024, at Sawyer George Funeral Home at 12:30 PM. At 2:00 PM He will be laid to rest at Coastal Bend State Veteran Cemetery with full Military Honors.
A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the graveside service at the VFW Post #3837, 12030 Leopard St, Corpus Christi, TX
In honor of Calvin’s love of dancing, please feel free to wear Western attire.
Visitation will held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Sawyer-George Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 12:30 pm at Sawyer-George Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at Coastal Bend State Veteran Cemetery.
