Walter Douglas Van Dorn, II, was born September 17, 1925 in Sandia, Texas to Walter Douglas Van Dorn, I, and Ida David Van Dorn. Friday, August 5, 2011, God received a true cowboy in Heaven. He suffered a head trauma injury and passed away in a Corpus Christi hospital. In World War II he served in the U. S. Navy. He was a retired carpenter for the ASARCO plant in Corpus Christi and after his retirement he and Ona Van Dorn started Van's Bar-Be-Que in Oakville, Texas. They made their home in George West, Texas for the last 30 years. He was a longtime member of Calallen Baptist Church, Callahan Baptist Church, the South Texas Trail Riders since 1974, the Mounted Sheriff's Posse and the V.F.W. He had a love of all animals and was a great horseman since introduced to them by his grandmother at the age of 6. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Glenna Emmert and his baby daughter, Janice Elaine Van Dorn. He is survived by his wife, Ona Van Dorn of George West, Texas; daughters, Darla (Butch) Vickers of Sinton, Texas and Terry Van Dorn of Corpus Christi, Texas; step-daughter, Kathy Jodson; three grandchildren, Patty (Wade) Walker of Lake McQueenie, Texas, Tammy (Bob) Miner of Corpus Christi, Texas and Doug (Diedre) Rabalais of San Antonio, Texas; eight great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren, Rod (Cindy), Jim and Wesley Oliver and Stacey (David) Lange, Rusty Vickers, Mendy Johnson and Jennifer Vickers; 7 step great grandchildren and many, many friends. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. until 9 P.M. with the family present from 7 P.M. until 9 P.M. Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 A.M. Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Sandia Cemetery in Sandia, Texas with Brother Pat Traxler, Pastor of the Brush Country Cowboy Church in George West officiating. Burial will follow at the Sandia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Doug Rabalais, Bob Miner, Wade Walker, Rusty Vickers, George Camp and Terry Richel.
