Sarah Avila

June 5, 1932 — December 29, 2017

On December 25, 2017, Sarah Mejia Avila left her earthly life to spend her eternal life walking the streets of gold with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born on June 5, 1932 to Cristobal and Sofia Mejia and had 6 brothers and 3 sisters. She lived a wonderfully blessed and adventurous life. She was married for 38 years to the absolute love of her life, Victor F. Avila, Sr. She loved to travel and did this often with her husband and her 5 children whom she dedicated her life to. She had 1 daughter, Miriam Gutierrez and 4 sons, Victor Jr. (Josie), Edward, Joe (Rose), and Arnold (Dorothy). She had 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and she loved them all tremendously. Sarah prayed her rosary everyday and enjoyed watching EWTN. In 1988, she was blessed by her husband when they opened up Avila’s Beer Garden and she was able to spend time doing what she loved most with her family and her friends which was listening to music, singing, dancing, cooking and baking. She enjoyed participating in cooking contests and her rum cake was a particular favorite. She is preceded in death by her husband Victor F. Avila Sr., her son in law Luis Gutierrez, Jr., her parents Cristobal and Sofia Mejia, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Her life will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 with a viewing beginning at 5:00 p.m. and a rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Sawyer George Funeral Home, 12497 Leopard St., Corpus Christi, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at St. Peter Prince of the Apostle’s Catholic Church, 3901 Violet Rd., Corpus Christi, Texas, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Rd., Corpus Christi, Texas. The family would like to thank Dr. Munson for taking care of Sarah and for his encouraging words that he always gave to her along with the staff and nurses of Aadi Home Health Agency.
