Roger Elwin Powell, age 75, from Robstown, Tx passed away peacefully in his home on September 18, 2023 with his loving family by his side after a hard-fought battle with mesothelioma.
Roger was born December 27, 1947, to Elwyn and Eunice Powell in Corpus Christi, Tx. After graduating from Ray High school Roger went on to complete an apprenticeship with Coastal Iron Works. Roger later worked in several refineries and machine shops as a machinist in the area until his retirement from Maintech Int. in 2016.
In 1965 he married the love of his life Peggy McCoy Powell of Banquete, Tx. In 1978 Roger and Peggy became residents of Robstown, Tx where they lived for the next forty-seven years and raised their only child, Tamara.
Roger was an extremely active member of his community and several surrounding communities. Roger was best known for his love of coaching and umpiring girls’ softball as well as involvement in the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show as the breeding superintendent for many years. Roger also spent countless hours trimming show cattle and teaching the youth how to show and fit. Since he was a young child and all throughout his life Roger was an avid hunter and bagged several trophy animals. In his younger years Roger obtained his pilots license, was a constable for Bill Bode, played men’s softball, coached men’s basketball, taught CPR, raced cars at CC Speedway, and dirt track motorcycles. Roger and Peggy also loved to ride motorcycles and were founding members of a local Gypsies motorcycle club. Also, together with his wife, they collected one of the largest antique glass collections in the state of Texas in which they were extremely proud of. Roger was an excellent wood worker and enjoyed spending time in his woodworking shop. Roger was a very proud patriot who loved his country dearly. Above all Roger loved watching all of his grandchildren show livestock, hunt, and play sports ranging from softball, volleyball, cheerleading, golf, baseball, football, basketball, and soccer.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, brother, a great grandchild, and precious wife Peggy. He is survived by his loving daughter Tamara Chadwick (Josh); four grandchildren, Myranda Kelley (Ross), Hayden Johnson (Christina), Jaxon Chadwick, and Draigon Silvas (Layla); Five great- grandchildren, Keegan Kelley, Kamryn Kelley, Kinley Johnson, Kailey Johnson, Baby Draigon Silvas, and his beloved dog, Puppy.
