“Bob” Slovak was born on December 1, 1930, in Wichita County, Texas, to Anton A. Slovak and Justina (Halencak) Slovak. The family farmed in nearby Foard County, near Crowell, Texas. In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and saw action in the Korean War where he sustained injuries during combat. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1953. He served in the Marine Reserves for several years. Following his active military service, Bob began a decades long career as a heavy equipment operator working for Slovak Brothers Construction and W.T. Young Construction. He took pride in his work and his expertise in construction was sought by many contractors.
On June 25, 1960, Bob married Judith (Judy) Miller of Weslaco, Texas. The couple settled in the Calallen area of Corpus Christi and were blessed with four daughters. Bob, proud of his Czech heritage, taught his girls to sing, polka, and waltz. Bob and his family were faithful members of the St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, where Bob ushered and served for many years.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, brothers: Johnny Slovak, Jerry Slovak, Ernest Slovak, William Slovak, Adolf Slovak, Pete Slovak, infant Jimmy Slovak, and Frank Vanek; and sisters: Shirley Johnson, infant Dorothy Slovak, infant Patricia Slovak, Mary McNary, Jodie Ennis and Leona Pavlicek. The family of Bob Slovak is very proud of their “Papa” for his service to his Country, to God, his community and to his family. Bob’s six grandsons are honored to serve as pallbearers.
