Robert E. Cunningham, Jr. passed away August 18, 2018 at the age of 95. He was born November 18, 1923 to Robert E. Cunningham, Sr. and Ida Ree McKee Cunningham in Kenedy, Texas. He graduated Kenedy High School and on January 6, 1942 he volunteered for military service for his country. After entering the service, he moved from one base to another and finally to New York for overseas duty. Arriving in Great Britain as a Military Policeman he was shipped to North Africa where he was promoted to Motorcycle Patrolman in the traffic section for two years. He then transferred to the Italian campaign and served until the end of the war. Robert entered Draughons College in San Antonio, Texas receiving his Accounting Degree. There he met the love of his life, Margie Fowler. They were married November 11, 1949 and moved to Corpus Christi in 1950 where he worked as an overhead crane operator for Halliburton and Centex Cement Corporation for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a faithful member of the Hwy 44 Church of Christ in Robstown. For many years he was a member of the Texas State Guard, serving under Col. Earl C. Dunn and reached the rank of Captain. He was a volunteer Fireman in the Annaville Fire Department and served as an Assistant Chief. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid bowler. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Lee Orien Cunningham and Lee’s wife Barbara, and his sister, Lois Irene Cunningham. He is survived by his wife, Margie; a son, Robert III and his wife, Deborah; grandchildren, Anthony Neil Cunningham and Erica Marie Cunningham; sister-in-law, Joyce Ryan. Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be conducted on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery with Larry Cash officiating.
