Ransom Samuel Douglass, Jr., 86, a life time resident of Nueces County, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on May 14, 2010. He was born December 20, 1923 to Ran and Annie Douglass. Growing up an only child, he learned a strong farming work ethic that served him well over the farming years whether it was a bumper crop or drought. He attended grades 1 through 6 at the Chapman Ranch Elementary School. His family moved to Robstown, Texas where he played high school football and graduated as a Robstown Cotton Picker - Class of 1941. Following his High School years, he attended Texas A&I University prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corp in October 1942. He continued his education during his military training at SLI University in Lafayette, La. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Asiatic Pacific theater until he was discharged in July 29, 1945. Upon returning home from the war, he dated and married Martha Jean Balzer of Driscoll, Texas. He was many things to many people but to everyone he touched, he was a friend. He ministered to everyone and shaped the memories of generations of Texans. He was a loving husband, a godly example as a father, and a role model for many young men and women. He never met a stranger and impacted those whose lives he touched in an indelible way. He and his wife were Charter Members of Central Baptist Church, Robstown (now River Hills Baptist Church, Calallen). It was there that he had his greatest impact on lives. He was a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and volunteer Youth Director. He invested his life in the younger generation and made an eternal investment for His King. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and sister, Margaret Blanche. He is survived by his wife of 62+ years, Martha Jean Balzer Douglass; his children, their spouses, and children: Sam and Joanne Douglass of Rockwall, Texas (Mark and Bethany Douglass, Scott and Diana Douglass, Timothy and Kristen Douglass, Elizabeth Douglass, Kinzee Douglass, and Karlee Douglass); David and Cindy Douglass of Portland, Texas (Kimberly Douglass and Ryan Douglass); and Wayne and Jean Carol Douglass Miller of Corpus Christi, Texas (Douglass and Kristina Miller, Sara Miller, Brooke Miller); eight great-grandchildren; Van Balzer (nephew) and a host of life long friends. Visitation will be at the Sawyer George Funeral Home, Monday, May 17, 2010, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at River Hills Baptist Church, Calallen, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 18, 2010, followed by graveside interment at the Rose Hill Memorial Park, Corpus Christi, Texas. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Mark Douglass, Tim Douglass, Ryan Douglass, Douglass Miller, and friends Eddie Bickham and Matt Setliff. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandson, Scott Douglass, and the Deacons of River Hills Baptist Church, Calallen. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to River Hills Baptist Church Building Fund.
