Ramiro Escobar, Sr., a World War II Veteran and employee of the Texas Highway Department for 18 years, died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the age of 88 at his home in the presence of his beloved family. He served his community as a baseball coach and umpire at Oil Belt Little League, a member of the G.I. Forum, and as a member of the Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission from 1975 to 1977. Ramiro lived his faith as a member of Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church for 54 years, and was in the Corpus Christi Catholic Cursillo movement for 40 years. He is preceded in death by his parents Eluterio Escobar Sr. and Andrea Farias, his brother Eligio Escobar, and his son-in-law Robert P. Samaniego. Ramiro is survived by his wife of 64 years, Juanita; 6 children: Ramiro Jr. (Stefanie), Marina Samaniego, Omar (Esiquia), Juanita Garcia (Arturo), Gabriel, and Pearl Perez (Robert); 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Odelia Jimenez, Ricardo, Rogerio, Rafael, Eluterio Jr., Andrea Hinojosa, Angelita Adame, Paula Lopez, and Maria Eloisa Flores. A Rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m., June 8, 2012 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home, 12497 Leopard Street. A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church, 1123 Main Drive, with the Funeral Mass being celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ramiro Escobar Memorial Fund. The funds will be used to purchase a gift for his beloved Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church in his memory.
