Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi - Peggy Jean McCain Brown, age 93, was called home to our Lord on Thursday, November 25, 2021. She was most affectionately known as 'Mimi'. She was born March 15, 1928 in Delight, Arkansas to Laura Lema Pye and Hosea Garrett McCain. She graduated from Delight High School a year early and was the top of her class. Peggy began taking classes at the business school in Little Rock, Arkansas, but came back home to Delight to take a job with a local lumber company.

She married Herman ‘Bubba’ Brown on February 12, 1949, and shortly thereafter they moved to Texas where her husband took a job in the refinery industry. They settled in Corpus Christi, where they together raised three wonderful children, Christina, Lisa, and Daryl.

Peggy would often share stories from her childhood and growing up in rural Arkansas. She was proud to share that her favorite childhood pet, a dog named Red Head, won the Arkansas State Fox Hunting contest one year, a picture of Red Head ran on the front page of the local newspapers. She would speak of completing her schoolwork in the evenings by a coal oil lamp.

Peggy was a longtime member of Arlington Heights Church of Christ. She prepped and prepared the communion for the weekly services for many, many years. She retired from Citgo after 30+ years of service at the age of 82.

She enjoyed attending her grandkids sporting events and loved to recount how she used to play halfcourt basketball in high school. She also enjoyed singing for many years in the Sweet Adeline’s singing group in Corpus Christi. Peggy was quite a snazzy dresser and enjoyed clothes shopping, two of her favorite places to shop were Godwin’s and Dillard’s. You could also find her almost weekly at Sun Harvest.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Lindell and Jarrell McCain.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 72 years; her three children, Iris Christina Hester, Lisa Ann Smith (Charles), and Daryl Herman Brown (Christine); five grandchildren, Dacia Smith Alford (Brent), Tamara Smith Wilson (Joey), Kaley Smith, Jace Smith (Jessica), Brenna Smith Key (Brandon); and 9 great-grandchildren, Parker, Preston, and Presley Alford, Hallie and Hayden Wilson, Reese and Kyle Smith, and Carson and Conrad Key. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Sawyer-George Funeral Home in Calallen. A private burial with family will take place the following day at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi.
