Milton Ganer

d. March 25, 2016

MILTON GANER, passed away on March 25, 2016 at age 86 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was the son of Grover M. "Pete" Gainer of Hutto, Texas and Florence nee Hart Gainer Moore. Milton grew up in and around Halletsville, Texas where he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Leland Moore. In 1945, he used a forged birth certificate to join the U.S. Marine Corps. During Marine Corps Recruit Training in San Diego, California, he had to undergo an emergency appendectomy, and his mother was notified that Milton was in the hospital. Fearing that he had been wounded in combat, his mother sent Milton's real birth certificate to the Marines, and they promptly discharged him and sent him home for being under age. Milton later joined the U.S. Air Force and was a Korean War veteran. Milton led a colorful life and worked in many different occupations including as a barber, a taxi driver, a car salesman, a finance company manager, a fruit stand and bar owner, and finally as a security guard for Koch refinery, where he retired in 1994. Milton and his family moved to Corpus Christi in the mid-1960s. The move gave him a chance to pursue his favorite hobbies fishing and beach combing, and provided an atmosphere where Milton could wear his favorite Hawaiian-style shirts just about anywhere at any time of the year. Milton loved dogs, and after retirement he took his dog and any strays that might join them for long walks on the beach nearly every day. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepparents; brothers, Billy Moore and Milfred Gainer and sister, Betty Jo Moore. Milton Ganer is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eunice nee Wilson; twin sons Donald and Ronald; four grandchildren, Melissa, Jarrett, Adam, and Kathryn; three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Laura, and Emilie; sister, Sue Dittmeyer; brother, Winfred "Wimpy" Gainer and numerous nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the caregivers at Westwood Manor Senior Care Center and Riverside Hospice. A casual dress memorial service is planned for Monday, April 4, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel. In-lieu-of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
