Merikay Gonsoulin

August 16, 1947 — August 22, 2015

On the evening of August 19, 2015, God called home the bravest of his earthly angels Merikay "Meme" Gonsoulin. She passed away after battling cancer for the second time in just three short years with family by her side. Our Heavenly Father saw how courageous she was and decided it was time to bring her to her eternal home. Merikay was born in Houston, TX on August 16, 1947 to the parents of Louie and Winnie Hoskins. She was a 1966 graduate of Roy Miller High School in Corpus Christi, TX. Merikay was fun loving and energetic. She loved to dance and would dance anywhere and everywhere. She also loved to sing and would sing just about anywhere. Her smile was infectious. And her laugh will be remembered by all. She was truthful and outspoken. Merikay loved her family and friends with all she had. Her world revolved around them all. Her heart was the biggest. This world has lost the most amazing woman ever. Merikay worked as an administrative assistant and book keeper for 30 plus years until she retired to stay home and spend more time with her beloved husband Robert "Bob" and help care for her grandson. She spent many years volunteering at the Corpus Christi State Supported Living Center and with the Special Olympics in Corpus Christi. Merikay loved people and seeing them happy and excited gave her tremendous pleasure. In 2012, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the young age of 65. Her courage, bravery, and strength was like no others. She fought hard and won that battle. She was doing great for 2 ½ years. In June of 2015, Merikay was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia (AML). She immediately began treatments but her cancer was so aggressive and her body was so tired that God decided her time here on Earth was complete and called her home. He proclaimed August 19, 2015 Merikay be Cancer Free for Eternity. And so she is. She won her last fight. Merikay is preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 34 years Robert "Bob" Gonsoulin, her son Gary Lofthouse, Jr., her parents Mr. & Mrs. Hoskins, her sister Grace Hoskins Brown, brothers Bud Hoskins and Walter Hoskins. Merikay is survived by her biggest fan and devoted daughter, Karrie Lofthouse. Her loving Sister, Pamela Rogers. Amazing Grandchildren, Austin (Kayla) Lofthouse, Camryn Lofthouse, Zachary Lofthouse, and Keaghan Lofthouse. Precious Great Granddaughter Kaytin Lofthouse. Step-sons, Mark (Pauli), Danny (Rosemary), and Mike Gonsoulin. Nephews, David Hoskins and Kight Rogers. And many other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Sawyer-George Funeral Home. Interment will follow at a later date in the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
