Mary Margaret McGregor, a descendant of a pioneer South Texas ranching family that dates back to 1857, passed away on January 3, 2025 in Carbondale, Illinois. She was born December 2, 1932, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Earl Leon McGregor and Esilla Claire Wright McGregor. Mary grew up in the Six Points area and graduated from Corpus Christi High School and then attended Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas. She had a long career in banking while working for numerous institutions in Corpus Christi.
In Mary’s free time she enjoyed her Blunzter home and all things outdoors, which included caring for cats, dogs, chickens, and cattle. In her early years it was horses that held her interest. She loved hunting and fishing. A favorite spot to spend time was Dos Perros Ranch near Christine and sharing that time with friends. She was all about fun and laughter, and like many in her family, she had the gift of gab!
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her dear friend Mary Lee Mays, as well as her sister, Ruth Evelyn McGregor Miller.
Mary is survived by her nephew Alfred Earl Miller, niece Lynda Claire Miller Hudson, great- nieces, Amy Miller McAfee, Virginia Hudson Jester, and great-nephew Ryan Miller, as well as a large group of extended family and friends. A wonderful group of friends includes Sandy Blaha, Kathy Reaves, and Judy Benedict. A special thanks to these ladies, who are more like family than friends, for their care and concern for Mary over these last few years in Ava, Illinois. A special thanks to the staff of Liberty Village in Carbondale as well as the staff of Hospice of Southern Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to one of Mary’s favorite nonprofit organizations: St. Francis Care which is an animal rescue organization located in Carbondale, Illinois. stfrancis-care.org/donate.
