Marvin "Butch" Pope

Marvin L. “Butch” Pope of Odem, Texas, passed away peacefully February 27, 2023. He was 81.

He is survived by his wife of 55 and a half years, Cecile Pope of Odem; sons, Robert Pope of Helotes, Texas, and Bryan Pope of College Station, Texas; Robert’s wife Susan and son Casey; Bryan’s sons Benjamin and Carter; and Benjamin’s and Carter’s mother, Erin Pope.

Marvin was born in Cameron, Texas, January 3, 1942, and graduated from William Adams High School in Alice, Texas, in 1960. After serving four years in the U.S. Air Force, he roughnecked for several years before working for Pontiac Refining Company (later Champlin, then CITGO). He retired in 1997.

Marvin was deeply devoted to his family and loved spending time with his grandsons. He also enjoyed reading westerns and books on Texas history; doing woodwork; playing cards and dominoes; and caring for their many dogs, most of which were rescue animals. In addition, he was a longtime active member of the First United Methodist Church of Odem.

A Celebration of Life for Marvin will be held at First UMC of Odem at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023.
