We've lost one of the last true cowboys. Our beloved Lee Roy "Pete" Wright passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 23, 2012 after suffering a heart attack last week. He was born March 4, 1933 in Bluntzer, Texas to Lee Roy Wright, Sr. and Isabelle Bluntzer Wright. Pete was a cowboy and wore many hats - a loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to many. He will be missed dearly by all. He leaves behind a large collection of his poems that will be cherished. Pete graduated from Texas A & M University in 1954 and was a loyal Fighting Aggie. After a brief service in the Army he worked for the Soil Conservation Service for 40 years. He was an accomplished team roper in the United States Team Roping Championship (USTRC) and held an annual team roping at his ranch in Banquete for 25 years. He was also a rodeo announcer and owned Voice of Radio Productions. He announced for George Strait's Team Roping Classic for 26 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. His father, Lee Roy Wright, Sr. died on the same day in 1973. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Wright Thompson and Megan Wright; two grandchildren, Taylor Thompson and Walker Wright Thompson; one brother, three sisters, and a large community of cousins and friends, including his longtime companion, Beatriz Ruggero. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2012 from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Sawyer-George Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in the Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Patrick R. Soule and Rev. David Cole officiating. Interment will follow in the Banquete Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Bluntzer Volunteer Fire Department, 6271 F.M. 666. Robstown, Texas 78380.
