Katherine “Kitty” Louise Benick, 83, of Corpus Christi, peacefully passed away November 2, 2024, earning her angel wings after a brief but hard fight with cancer, surrounded by her daughters. She was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to so many. Kitty was born February 22, 1941, in Corpus Christi to Leon and Anna Marie Dorrough. To many people she was known as Kitty, but to her family she was our GrandKitty.
Early in life she lived in Corpus Christi and attended Ray High School. In the early 1960’s she briefly worked at Snapka’s Drive-In, where she met her beloved Don. Once they were married, she was able to live out her dream of raising their family and making their house a home. Kitty and Don were happily married for 57 glorious years with their three daughters. Her life was very full, surrounded by friends and family. She had many hobbies over the years including enjoying the beauty of hot rod cars, bowling and playing bunco with her friends. Her and Don loved to travel together, whether it was a quick road trip to a good restaurant or a few days to get away. She loved going to Las Vegas and Coushatta to see the lights and to play some slots. She also enjoyed a good game at the blackjack table. In the late 70’s she worked the snack bar at Gulf Bowl Bowling Alley where her daughters hung out and bowled. She loved being with her daughters and spending time with their friends and families. One of her all-time favorite things to do was to spend the day shopping with her daughters. However, shopping with her grandkids and great grandkids filled her heart even more. Many laughs and millions of memories were made during those days. A full day of shopping always meant eating out at the best restaurants for lunch and dinner, with a quick trip to Starbucks for an afternoon pick me up. She loved to go to a good movie at the theater, where she would always have everyone’s popcorn container full, boxes of candy and plenty to drink. She always made sure everyone had enough snacks so no one had to miss the movie. Kitty loved to celebrate birthdays and every holiday. She never missed an early morning phone call to her close loved ones to sing them the “Happy Birthday” song, to start their day. She always did celebrations up so big and extravagant with balloons, singing candles and enough food and treats to keep everyone more than satisfied. Her favorite times were spent with her family playing card games like Go Fish and War with the grandkids, scratching off lotto tickets or just sitting and enjoying a good talk and some laughs. Kitty enjoyed walking around her neighborhood or sitting outside in the evenings to chat with her neighbors. She never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation anywhere she went, whether it was the bank or the grocery store. Grandkitty always made sure everyone had what they needed and was more than willing to “run to the store and grab more” if she had to. She was always giving of herself and ready to help others. She had an infectious, one of a kind laugh and loved a good joke. She was very loved by her family and friends.
