Mr. Jose F. Canales, aged 97, died peacefully in Corpus Christi, Texas surrounded by the love of his family.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Corine Canales, and is survived by his children, Nora (David) Hernandez, their daughters, Stephanie and Jennifer; David Canales, his sons, Sean and Brandon; Gilda (Richard) Mesquias, their eldest daughter, Erica (Jacob) Boggus, their children, Emma Rose and Jackson; their youngest daughter, Angela Rose; Celinda Huband, her sons, Alexander and Joseph; Cynthia (Giovanni) Ponte, their son, Giovanni (Stephanie) Ponte Jr; their daughter, Andrea (Ben) Malmer and their daughter, Lucy Claire.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucinda and brother, Benito and has one surviving brother, Gonzolo Canales Jr.
Joe was born in small farming community in Sajita, Texas and was one of 4 children. He helped on the farm until he was conscripted in 1945 and served in the US Army in WWII.
Joe’s greatest ambition centered around family – he wanted to get a good job, buy a car, get married, buy a house and have children and to give them a good education, all of which he achieved.
He was a keen dancer and met his future wife, Corine, at a dance in the Galvan Ballroom in Corpus Christi. They fell in love and got married that same year on October 18th, 1952.
He worked at Corn Products for 31 years until it was taken over by Valero where he worked in a supervisory capacity until his retirement in 1990.
Joe delighted in his role as father, grandfather and more recently great-grandfather. He was a great example of love in action and was always ready to help his family when they needed it.
He loved travelling from coast-to-coast road trips in the USA with his children, to England, Spain, Gibraltar, Germany and South America.
His life was one of devotion – to his parents as a child, to his brothers and sister and then to his own family and always to God through his nightly prayers for family and friends.
Joe will be remembered by his family as the gentlest, kindest, most patient and fiercely loyal of people.
Mr. Jose Canales, forever cherished, resting peacefully in the merciful, loving hands of God.
