John (Johnny) "Electric Bass Extraordinaire" of Corpus Christi passed suddenly. John Michael Mitchell was born July 20, 1953 to John Raymond and Margaret Marie Mitchell, in Fort Worth, Texas. Johnny was a gifted, self-taught musician. He learned to play harmonica, piano, steel guitar, and acoustic but his love was bass guitar. He was well known in the music industry for most of his life, traveling around the country playing in numerous bands. Johnny was creative and smart. He served in the Unites States Army and Army Reserves. He loved building military models, history, and science, and was an avid coin collector. He worked as a manager at the Science Spectrum Museum in Lubbock, Texas prior to returning to Corpus Christi. He attended Del Mar College, Howard County Junior College where he achieved inclusion in the Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, and South Plains College where he earned Phi Theta Kappa membership. Johnny wanted to become an addiction counselor and his classes reflected his desire to help others struggling with addiction, having overcome his own many years ago. Johnny is survived by his son John Mitchell, his daughter Desiree Dickerson (Kenneth), brothers, Larry Mitchell, David (Kate) Mitchell, sister, Lisa (Sid) Smith, half-sister, Barbara (Bennett) Carter, and three grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service celebrating Johnny's life will be conducted on Saturday, July 20, 2013, his 60th birthday, at Sawyer George Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM.
