John Berger, Sr.

John Allen Berger, Sr. was called home by Jesus on March 4, 2018 at the age of 82.Born on August 19, 1935 in Runge, TX, he was the only son of Gotlieb John and Eunice Mae (Andrews) Berger. After the premature death of Gotlieb, Eunice was later remarried to W. E. “Bill” LeBleu, who became the only father the young boy had ever known. This kind and upstanding man loved his mother and raised little Johnny as his very own.Later in life, John was an avid boater and fisherman. He loved being out on the water and taught his kids the fun of water skiing, catching a fish and jetting across the waves with the wind in your face. He was an electrician for many years and a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union #278. Thanks to his love of fishing, there were many times that his brotherhood at work was treated to a lunch of fried fish, which was always a much-anticipated event.John also appreciated the simple joys of turning the soil, getting his hands dirty, planting and harvesting. If you were the neighbor crazy enough to bag your leaves and leave them at the street, he was the neighbor crazy enough to drive by, pick them up and take them home for composting the family garden.Lastly, John’s commitment to Jesus Christ his Savior was of utmost importance in his life, and his passion for the Lord was evident during years spent teaching Sunday School, leading music and singing in the choir and other vocal groups at the church.John was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, May Berger. He leaves behind his 5 children, Allen, Jack, Debra (and their mother Joan), Randy and Rodney; his 10 grandchildren, Lindsey, James, Lauren, Jonathan, Abigail, Andrew, Emily, Lois, Ruth & Claire; and 4 great grandchildren (and counting), Landon, Jillian, Evangeline & Jackson.Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Sawyer-George Funeral Home.Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will follow at 1:00 PM at Mineral Cemetery near Beeville, Texas.
