Jesse Laing was born on September 22, 1923 and passed away with loved ones by his side on Monday, September 16, 2013 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Mr. Laing served in the United States Army during World War II, earning a Purple Heart as well as many other honors. After his military service, he married Elaine Knutson on February 14, 1961 and worked as a boilermaker for many years; however, Jesse was best known for his artistic talents, his kind heart, and his love for animals. His art work has been spotlighted many times on television and in the newspapers. Jesse could pick up a pencil or a pocket knife and create a treasure within a matter of minutes. One of his best-known sculptures, a dedication to District Attorney William "Bill" Mobley, can still be seen today in the Nueces County Courthouse. Jesse's love for people and passion for animals went hand-in-hand. He trailered his ponies to countless parties, as well as church and school functions. His door was always open to visitors and his backyard home to all kinds of animals. Mr. Laing was preceded in death by his loving mother Julia Laing; his sister, Maria Martin (Willie); his brother, Ramón; and his eldest son, Jesse W. Laing (Elva). As a father to eleven children, Jesse's love was shared by many. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elaine Knutson Laing; 5 daughters, Nita Faucett (Larry), JoAnn Mortimer, Julie Ann Grimsinger, Joy Montgomery (Tim), Jacqueline Smith (Charles); and 6 sons, Jerry Horton (JoAnna), Johnny Horton, Jeff Laing (Sheila), Jason Laing and Jonathan Laing. Mr. Laing also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as life-long friends and his favorite pony of 32 years, Rebel. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Sawyer George Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation begins at 12:30 P.M. and funeral service begins at 1:30 P.M. Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Robstown with full military honors. Six of his grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
