James “Jim” McCown – beloved husband, father, and grandfather – passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024 at the age of 76, after a long struggle with dementia/Alzheimer’s.
Jim was born on August 17, 1947, to Harold and Louise (Tindol) McCown in Beeville, Texas. He graduated from the Corpus Christi Academy in 1965, and proudly attended Texas A&M University, where he earned his Bachelor’s of Finance Degree in May of 1969 - he loved his Aggies.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Linda (Hight) McCown. He was a devoted and doting father to his three children and four grandchildren: James II and his son, James III; Crystal (Chad Keys) and her daughter, Keira; and Kimberly and her son and daughter, Curtis and Morgan. He is also survived by his older brother, Harold (Lillian) McCown of New Braunfels as well as numerous loving nephews, nieces, and cousins. Preceding him in death were his loving parents, Harold and Louise McCown; his adored in-laws, Curtis and Barbara Hight; his beautiful daughter, in law Sylvia McCown; and a whole clan of extended family.
Jim lived a life of service to his family, country, church, and community. He was honored to have been an Eagle Scout. On December 12, 1969 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He hoped to be a pilot, but trouble with his ears prevented that dream; however, Jim still proudly served, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged on December 15, 1972.
Jim was a self-proclaimed workaholic, haven taken great pride and honor in being a provider for his family. Upon leaving the Air Force, Jim utilized his finance degree and worked for several different banks as an auditor and eventual President of Charter Bank. He then became General Manager of the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation. He went on to become the Comptroller for the Mine Warfare Division with the United States Navy, before retiring as a Comptroller with FEMA.
Being a devout Catholic, Jim was proud to serve the Lord. He was an active volunteer within St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He was extremely proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a conferring officer for St. Peter’s, the Diocese of Corpus Christi, and the State. He achieved the rank of 4th Degree Knight.
Jim was very proud of his community and wanted to see it grow and prosper, not just for his children but for the entire community. He loved coaching PeeWee Football and Little League baseball, later serving on the board for Oilbelt Little League and eventually serving as President. He then went on to become a member and President of the Calallen Athletic Boosters Club and President of the Calallen School Board. He also worked as team dad and an official scorekeeper for Northwest Little Miss Kickball. His dedication and drive went beyond just his children’s interest, with Jim serving as President of the Cemetery Association in San Patricio. He also served and was a member of numerous other boards and clubs, including the Parks and Recreation Board and the Rotary Club.
One of Jim’s favorite quotes was “Veni, Vidi, Vici.” I came, I saw, I conquered. For him, it should be “I came, I loved, I served.” He loved fiercely and deeply and just wanted to provide, protect, and serve all those around him. We take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and that his love resides in each of us.
