James Richard Covington Sr.

James Richard Covington Sr., age 89, passed away March 8, 2025 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born in Los Angeles, California where his parents, Fount Leveon Covington and Roberta McNeill Covington were vacationing and was raised in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was a graduate of Paschal High School and attended the University of Texas before graduating from Texas Wesleyan College. He was a proud UT Longhorn as was so proud that his grandson Matthew followed in his footsteps after his children chose to attend other institutions. He worked for PPG Industries, rising through the ranks of the sales department to become a regional manager before his retirement in 1987. After retiring, he moved to Corpus Christi and purchased the Corpus Christi, Harlingen, and Victoria locations of PPG and renamed them Longhorn Glass. He ran these locations before retiring for a second time. In his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf, and volunteering for 20 years at Driscoll Childrens Hospital. He loved coaching for Arapahoe Little League in the 1970’s, watching his son and later grandsons play baseball, attending almost every playoff game of Westside High School in Houston, Texas in 2008. He was a life long Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees fan, enjoying his yearly trips to New York with his son to see his beloved Yankees play in person. The year of his 80th birthday, he achieved a lifelong dream of playing golf in Scotland with his son. He loved old time country music, and played both the guitar and banjo. 

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia Luck Covington, his children Kimberly Covington Clayton (Paul), James Richard “Rick” Covington, and Karen Covington-Yow (Mike), his grandchildren Matthew Clayton (Kelly) and Travis Clayton(fiancé Anna Kingsley), and great- granddaughter Caroline Anne Clayton, who he was blessed to be able to meet at Christmas. He loved cats, and leaves behind his cat Samantha.He is also survived by his sister Marjorie Covington Napier and her children Ron Bishop Mike Bishop, Georganne Spangler, and Larry “Skip” Macy; cousins Jim Lee Patty, Mary Patty Short, John Patty, Roberta Malone, and Bobby Mitchell; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Memorial Contributions may be made to Driscoll Childrens Hospital in honor of Jim Covington.
