Jacquelyn Cox

Jacquelyn B. Cox died Saturday, December 22, 2012. She was born "Jacquelyn Ann", on December 23, 1933 to Herman Cardell and Juanita Meredith (Mobley) Bazemore in Bulloch County, Georgia. Jackie was the granddaughter of Paschal and Annie Mae (Zorn) Mobley, who were instrumental in raising her. In March of 1949, Jackie went on a last date to break up with James B. "Red" Barton of Orlando, Florida, and came home married! Together, they had three children before the marriage ended in divorce. While selling sandwiches from a Chuck Wagon as a single mother in Corpus Christi, Jackie met machinist George Gayle Cox. A New Year's Eve dance date sealed their fate and they were married on March 20th of that same year. In time, they mourned the loss of a still-born son, but later rejoiced in giving birth to a healthy baby girl. Jackie was a strong-willed woman with a survivor's spirit. Determined to break the cycle of poverty from her youth, she took on seasonal jobs like distributing phone books and taking census reports. She most enjoyed a successful career selling Avon products, climbing her way up to management and earning several service pins for her achievements. Before retiring, Jackie worked as a secretary for the American Lung Association. All the while, she maintained the books for George's business, Cox Machine Shop. But Jackie always felt her greater calling in life was to be a mother. And all the gifts and talents given to that role were self-taught. Many late nights turned into early mornings while sewing clothes for the family or canning vegetables from the garden. Jackie prided herself on being a realist, and had little tolerance for idealism or laziness. So when she sensed genuine effort and solid goals, she offered generosity and support like no other. Whether it meant digging deep to help pay for someone's work uniform or secure a deposit on an apartment-or making phone calls to agencies and institutions when her own pockets weren't deep enough-Jackie pulled out all the stops and got it done. For many, she altered the course of their lives. Before the decline of her own health, Jackie gave a year of her life as a live-in care-giver to a terminally-ill family member. Jackie loved cold fried chicken and catfish, cornbread and milk, rice, and chocolate. She loved to dance and possessed the rhythm and moves to do it well. She enjoyed watching things grow, like tall stalks of corn in the garden and tall grasses that swayed like rippling water alongside the highway. Her favorite bible passage came from Philippians 4:11-13. She was a meticulous bookkeeper. Jackie is preceded in death by her husbands and infant son. She is survived by all four of her children: Deborah (Ricardo) Ramos, Richard Barton, Cathy (Joe) Roznovsky, and Neva (Chad) Kelly; her grandchildren and their families: Angela Ramos and Tristan; Mark & TJ Roznovsky and Clara, Luke, Leah and Levi; David & Sara Roznovsky and Jo Lorraine, Andrew and Mae; Gary & Amy Roznovsky; Kevin Barton; Brian Barton; daughter-in-law, Kathy Heinz Barton. Jackie also leaves behind life-long and beloved friend Barbara Cooper, and special Harrington Drive Neighbors whose loyalty and friendship knew no bounds: Paul Hickey and Gracie Garcia, Wayne & Pat Wilks, George & Dolly Silver, and Marvin & Maria Pivonka.
