Isabel's father, James Cowan, arrived in the United States from Scotland when he was fourteen. He became a land man and when Isabel was in her early teens, the family moved to the Rio Grande Valley. They lived on Boca Chica Road in Brownsville where her father owned a dairy. The area is now known as Cowan Terrace. Isabel graduated from El Jardin High School where she was a star basketball player. In 1933, she married Homer Hanna who served as an educator in Brownsville for 44 years and was honored by having Homer Hanna High School named for him. After his retirement, Homer and Isabel spent many happy years traveling throughout the United States in their motor home. They were married for 71 years and had two children, Jo Ann Hanna Stovall and Homer Lee Hanna, Jr. When Isabel became a grandmother, she was lovingly called "Meme" by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends. Isabel was an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother. As a wonderful cook and homemaker, she devoted her life to loving and supporting her family. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Brownsville for many years and was a member of PEO. After moving to Calallen to live with her daughter and family in 1994, she became a member of River Hills Baptist Church. Isabel "Meme" Hanna will always be remembered as a strong, loving, petite, Scottish lady who loved the Lord and was an inspiration to her family and to all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at River Hills Baptist Church, 16318 Northwest Boulevard, Robstown, Texas.
