Hugh Vickers, Jr., age 88, entered into heavenly rest on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 with his loving family at his side. He was born on January 6, 1922 in Ranger, Texas to Hugh, Sr. and Ruby Vickers. Mr. Vickers served in the United States Navy in WWII in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945. He retired from CCAD, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mathis and was a deacon of the Church. He was past president of NARFE in Mathis and Portland. There were many things he loved in his life, baseball, the Dallas Cowboys, fishing, hunting, family reunions, Sunday School meetings and social events at their home in Swinney Switch. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roy Vickers. He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 68 years, Juanita Vickers; son, Kenneth (Betty) Vickers; daughters, Sharon (Otis) Nolen, Janice (John) Ertz; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; brother, Buddy (Treva) Vickers; sister, Sissy Brittain, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Judith Piner and the staff at Angel Bright Hospice. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 9, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sawyer-George Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Susana Beltran officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Robstown Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Shawn Abraham, Jarred Vickers, Bob Vickers, Bub Vickers, Kenneth R. Vickers and Richard Brittain. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Whitley, Cecil Cotten, Steve McBride, Milton Shambo, Al Phillips, Glen Fowler, Robbie Jarrett, and Jim Patzke.
