Herman Allen Pollard, 68, of Bandera, Texas, and former resident of Robstown, Texas, was called to heaven on Friday, October 5, 2018. Allen was born on October 7, 1949 in Robstown. He is preceded in death by his father, Malcolm A. Pollard, grandparents Herman & Christine Paul, Louis A. Pollard, and Lucille Swope and step-son Andrew Davis. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Hoelscher Davis Pollard of Bandera, Texas; daughter Karie (Trey)Wimberly of Goliad, Texas; son Jody (Leanna) Pollard of San Antonio, Texas and step-son Mark (Kelly) Davis of Andover, Massachusetts; mother Pauline Pollard of Marble Falls, Texas; former spouse Vicki Pollard of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandsons Mac, Weston and Walker Wimberly, Hudson and Lawson Pollard and granddaughter McKenzie Davis, as well as his brother Andy (June) Pollard of Canyon Lake, Texas, sister-in-law Rita (Jim) Hausman of Mooresville, NC; nephew Justin Pollard of Dallas, Texas; nieces Cayce (Adam) Corley of Katy, Texas and Michelle and Kristen Hausman; great nephews Austen & Jaksen Corley, and great nieces Lucy & Annie Pollard; uncles Jimmy (Sally) Swope of New Braunfels, Texas and William H. (Geneva) Paul of Augusta, Georgia; aunt Gloria (Ronald) Blanton of Marble Falls, Texas, numerous cousins, and countless friends. Allen was a devoted husband and father and most proud of all his grandchildren. He loved the Lord, was baptized and a member of the Robstown United Methodist Church. He graduated from Robstown High School in 1968, and had attended Texas A&I University as a business major. He began a career in radio that spanned approximately 15 years working as an announcer, program director and salesman for area stations KTAI, KOPY and KROB. Allen was recognized for his contributions to radio, and in 2008 received the "Straight From the Heart" DJ award from Music City Heart of Texas. He also announced the Alice Coyote football games on the radio for KOPY. Allen was passionate about music. He received his first guitar at age 14 and over the years became an accomplished musician playing guitar, steel guitar and fiddle. Allen was a member of multiple bands, the first of which was a rock band. Later, he joined his family's country western band, Mac Pollard & the Western Stars as lead guitar player, followed by steel guitar player for Al Dean & the All Stars, the Jukebox Cowboys, the George West Opry house band, and The Majek Orchestra polka band. He also played with Leona Williams and the late Box Car Willie. Allen's musical talents eventually led to the creation of Dancehall Sounds DJ service whose mission was to recreate the sounds and songs heard in traditional Texas dancehalls. This included occasional live fiddle and singing performances. Dancehall Sounds was very successful, creating a large following of fans who enjoyed dancing to his choice of music. His life-long passion of music enhanced appreciation for traditional country music, created numerous special friendships, and one of his performances even made it to YouTube (Allen Pollard Fiddle Debut). Allen loved to entertain and instruct others how to play string instruments, especially youngsters. Allen's day-job career included employment by Champlin Refinery for 7 years where he met a lot of wonderful people. After leaving refinery work, he became an independent insurance agent and then was employed by Carlisle Insurance in Alice, Texas where he retired after 30 years of service. He was a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow. Allen was involved in his children's activities by serving as a volunteer and board member of Northwest Football League for 10 years. He was a lifelong supporter of the 4-H program having participated since 9 years of age; served as board member, Vice President and President of the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show and was a member of the NCJLS Queen's Committee for 25 years (1990-2015). He also provided his expertise in management of sound equipment for the Queen's Contest and the livestock auction. Allen traveled many miles and hours to watch his grandsons' sporting events and was an avid supporter of Goliad Athletics and Texas Aggie Football. Visitation will be held at Sawyer George Funeral Home on Thursday, October 11th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. A celebration of Allen's life will be held at Grace United Methodist Church on Friday, October 12, 2018 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Runge Cemetery in Runge, Texas at 4:00 p.m. Pallbearers include Trey Wimberly, Mac Wimberly, Weston Wimberly, Walker Wimberly, Bernie Mokry and Jim Hausman. Honorary pallbearers are Darwin Fuhrken, Ernie Scholz, James Flaherty, Harvey Buehring, Gary Miller, Galen Calloway, Tommy Doyle, Tiger Gene Gary, Jerry King, Larry Blomstedt, Alan Sheppard and Billy Paul. Allen's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your prayers and support especially to those who visited, called to check on Allen, the group "Hello's" from the VFW and Community Hall, those who sang and played their musical instruments at Allen's home to entertain him, and sent videos of music performances and football plays.
