Helen B. Johnson

March 28, 1925 — February 17, 2025

Alice

Helen Louise Johnson lived a long life of 99 years. She passed from this life on February 17, 2025, to join her family and friends in Heaven. Born March 29, 1925, she was one month short of 100 years. She now once again uses that beautiful soprano voice to sing with the angels. God has taken her frail body, full of weakness and discomfort, and replaced it with joy and happiness to walk the streets of gold.

Helen loved to sing and had thousands of hymns and songs memorized from the 1930’s on. Although Dementia took her memory, music was the love that did not escape her and kept her happy in the later years of her life and amazed many. She was a devout Christian throughout her life. During her lifetime she was a bank bookkeeper for many years, a Walmart greeter, seamstress, crafter, made beautiful ceramics, and volunteered at her church. She passed her joy of music and belief in God on to each of her children and many friends.

In 1957 she moved her three children to the community of Boldtville, outside of San Antonio, and joined Boldtville Presbyterian Church. All three children will always remember her beautiful soprano voice singing and leading the choir. She moved from San Antonio to Corpus Christi in 1989. On February 12, 2002, Helen completed an important goal in life earning her GED diploma from Odem ISD. She soon joined Arlington Heights Church of Christ, where she met Brooks Johnson whom she married in November 2003. In 2013, Brooks passed away in their home from health complications. Three years later, Helen’s own health issues led her to The Villa Northwest Assisted Living where she lived 8 years with the loving and caring staff. In August 2024, due to complications with her Dementia, she fell and began to decline. Being a strong-willed woman, she continued her battle another six months at The Premier of Alice Nursing Home. Her care by all the staff at The Premier was vital for those last days, as well as the team from the Astella Hospice Care. A special thanks is given to The Villa Northwest Assisted Living, The Premier of Alice Nursing Home, and Astella Hospice Care of Corpus Christi. Their love and attention for her has been priceless.

Helen is survived by her three children Dean E. Atkinson (Kay); Burwin L. Atkinson (Janice); and Mary Lou Atkinson Whittington (Mike), 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Arlington Heights Church of Christ in Corpus Christi on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 10:30 A.M. An additional memorial service will be held at Boldtville Presbyterian Church in San Antonio on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, gifts to either church listed or the Villa Northwest Assisted Living in Corpus Christi will be truly appreciated.
