Flynn Dennis, Jr.

February 10, 1935 — August 29, 2016

Flynn Howard Dennis, Jr. was born February 10, 1935 to Flynn Dennis, Sr. and Marie Robbins Dennis in Kingsville, Texas, where he and his brother, Roy, attended school and made many life-long friends. Some of his favorite memories were of his neighborhood buddies and the Brahma Marching Band. He attended Texas A&I before transferring to Abilene Christian College where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Biology/Chemistry/Bible in 1956. He married Sue Bishop and together they raised a family of three daughters for 18 years. A fourth daughter was born, but died shortly after birth. In 1961, Flynn became the principal at Noonan Elementary in Alice, at age 25. He completed his Master's Degree in Education at A&I. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 8 years. In the late sixties, Flynn was hired by SRA, an educational publishing company, where he was a top producing associate for nearly twenty years. In 1975, Flynn married Johanna who was to be his wife for the next forty-one years. Together, Jo's three children joined Flynn's to become a blended family of six. Sadly, the two suffered the loss of Jo's oldest son in 1987. As the years passed, they were blessed with many loving grandchildren with whom they shared their love for animals, science, history and music. Flynn returned to Alice ISD in 1983 where he served as Principal at Dubose Middle School, and then Mary R. Garcia Elementary School, until he became the Parent Coordinator for the district. As an educator he was especially proud of his work in PTA, the High Hopes Program, Parental Involvement Programs, and the Little Olympics. During his career as an educator, he received numerous awards and recognition to include: Area ATPE Administrator of the Year (two alternate years), Texas State ATPE Administrator of the Year, and selection into the National Principal's Leadership Academy (University of Delaware), where his peers honored him with the Best of the Best Leadership Award. Flynn retired at the age of 75 and enjoyed teaching a college Sunday School class and his delightful great-grandchildren how to read. Flynn and Jo were long-time residents of Bishop and members of the Kingsville Church of Christ. The family is grateful to the church for their love and spiritual support and for providing countless meals during Jo's illness and Flynn's hospital stays this past year. Flynn is pre-deceased by his parents, his infant daughter Kelly Marie, sister-in-law Wilma Dennis, stepson Randy Bussard, and most recently by his beloved wife Johanna Dennis, who passed away only fourteen days earlier. He is survived by his brother Roy Smith Dennis (Nonie), daughters; Cindy Dennis Prowse (Lewis), Kathleen Dennis Johnson (Kenneth), Barbara Dennis Biel (Robert), and lovingly devoted stepchildren; Kelly Bussard and Marsha Jo Prukop (James). "Dash" is also survived by numerous grandchildren, Kevin and Juliet Johnson, Kyle and Lindsey Johnson, Bullet and Kendra Riebschleager, David and Kathleen Biel, Darren and Teresa Biel, Austin Prowse, Kimberly Prowse, Rene and Jo Marie Prukop-Falcon, Randy Prukop, Deric and Bonnie Saffell, five great grandchildren, plus two on the way, niece Julie Davis, nephew Roy Smith Dennis, Jr., and nine first cousins. Visitation with the family present will be from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M. Thursday, September 1, 2016 and from 1 P.M. until 2 P.M. Friday, September 2, 2016 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel.
