Dr. Glenn Preston McCarty Jr., 80, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died peacefully September 11, 2024 at 3:03pm. His family was at his side.
Born November 19, 1943, to Glenn Preston, Sr.,and Margaret McCarty, in Greenville, South Carolina, Glenn was raised in Dallas, Texas. He had a very proper upbringing and his parents were filled with loving kindness, as was he. After he graduated from Jesuit High School in Dallas, he continued to live a very faith-filled life with a strong love for the Blessed Mother. Throughout his life, he recited his Latin prayers fervently, never losing sight of Christ. He had an incredible library of books including the Jerome Biblical Commentary, as well as many spiritual classics. Along with that, he had a very diverse range of interests and hobbies.
He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in History at the University of Texas in Austin, while also driving tour buses and working as a diesel mechanic on the side, before entering the Army as an Airborne paratrooper and sharpshooter. At that time, he was stationed in Germany, before intuiting a call to study medicine. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1968.
Dr. McCarty graduated with a degree in medicine from the Kansas City University School of Osteopathic Medicine. It was while he was working at the Corpus Christi Osteopathic Hospital in Texas as Chief of Staff, when he met the love of his life, Gloria. Ever the Southern gentleman, he never missed taking time for special moments, such as opening the door to the car for her, wherever they went.
In 1988, he was recruited by the Gundersen Lutheran Healthcare System in La Crosse, Wisconsin which appointed him the Medical Director of one of their satellite locations. He made the trek from Texas to the Midwest via motorcycle and worked in Spring Grove, Minnesota as the Medical Director of the Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center, which included a hospital, nursing home, a clinic, and an emergency room.
He and Gloria were inseparable; they traveled extensively across the United States very regularly, visiting almost all the National Parks both here and in Canada, from Banff to the Grand Canyon, and many tourist attractions as well, from Napa Valley to New York City. Glenn also had a love for musicals and had a wide range of taste in music. He loved jazz, most especially when his wife was dancing with him!
Dr. McCarty was known for his gift of service and love of people. Often, he needed to be pulled away by his nurses from patients (especially the World War II veterans), when he would spend too much time visiting with them. He is also known to have delivered the 22nd child of an Amish patient at one point. He was very affable and a great conversationalist.
In Spring Grove, he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at church, and in addition, was the volunteer physician for the local wrestling and high school football teams. He had a passion for medical journals, world history, geography, World War II aircraft, photography, and classic movies.
In 2010, Dr. McCarty retired after many years as a Family Practice Physician. It was during this time that Glenn and Gloria continued their passion for travel aboard multiple cruise ships, where they went from Alaska to Europe and around the entire continent of South America by sea on two separate occasions! They also visited many pilgrimage sites, including Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Mexico and the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Shrine in Missouri.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn Preston and Margaret, and his brother, Mike. He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; his sister Duff Bourgeois (Jerry); only son Preston McCarty (Nicole); three daughters, Dr. Theresa Labbé (Jason), Dr. Laurie Luciani, and Jackie McCarty; seven grandchildren, Elyssa Teel (Tristan), Micaela Popp (Braden), Addison McCarty, Hunter McCarty, Wesley Myers, Ollie Myers, and Pearle McCarty; and seven great grandchildren, Reagan Teel, Stassie Teel, Serafina Teel, TJ Teel, JT Teel, Peter Popp, and Elizabeth Popp.
"May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your arrival and lead you to the holy city Jerusalem. May choirs of angels receive you and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.”
