On September 17, 1945, the world welcomed Donald David Ermis, a soul whose life would be a testament to genuine human connection and service to others.
Don was born in Robstown, Texas and raised on a farm in Banquete, Texas, the youngest son of Vaclav and Theresa Ermis.
From his early days attending St. John’s Catholic School and Banquete High School to pursuing an Associates Degree in Architectural Technology at Del Mar College, Don's relentless curiosity was evident.
In the United States Air Force stationed in Florida revealed a side of Don that resonates with his core principles of connection and empathy. While many remember military service for camaraderie and adventures, Don cherished the friendships he formed with the chow hall ladies. This profound kinship became a lifelong practice, extending beyond his military days. Whether it was waitstaff at a restaurant, bank tellers, postal employees, or the friendly faces at the grocery store or doctor's office, Don genuinely wanted to know and care about the lives of others. He had a unique ability to treat strangers as friends and friends as cherished members of his family. His kindness and generosity knew no bounds, as he offered a helping hand to anyone in need, regardless of whether they were acquaintances or lifelong companions.
In 1970, Don married, Georgia Malik, and together they embarked on a remarkable 30-year journey, raising two wonderful daughters.
Fueled by a strong work ethic and commitment to a job done well, Don ventured into diverse roles, leaving his mark in various fields. He spent many years as a farmer, tending the family land with love and devotion. His precast company played a pivotal role in constructing the iconic landmarks, the Corpus Christi Miradores and Texas State Aquarium, both showcasing his dedication to precision and architectural finesse. And for over 25 years, Don traversed the United States as a long haul truck driver for Whitey Patton/Lonestar. His journey on the open road highlighted his love for new stories while always leading him back to his beloved community in Nueces County.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Don's life was defined by his commitment to making a positive impact. His support for the Nueces County Junior Livestock was a testament to his dedication to giving back. He was an active member of several committees, served as the Swine Superintendent for several years, and was the longest running General Superintendent, serving in that position for 20 years from 1989 to 2008. Even after retiring from that role he still helped out with the annual sale and queen’s contest for many years.
His altruism extended to years as a local volunteer firefighter, as well as time given to supporting the Costal Bend Relay for Life Fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
Amidst his many pursuits, Don found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. Gathered around a kitchen table with friends, savoring stories, jokes, and a good cup of coffee.
