Davene Rhyne

Davene Virden Rhyne passed away at home surrounded by family in Spring, Texas on January 3rd, 2025.

Davene was born April 11, 1936, in Winters, Texas, the sixth child of David and Mary Virden. Davene was salutatorian of the Fredericksburg High School Class of 1953. She attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, and married Zane Rhyne on December 26, 1953. Following their marriage, Zane and Davene made their home in Corpus Christi, Texas for more than 40 years.

Davene was a member of Arlington Heights Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school, sang and directed music for countless weddings and funerals. Zane and Davene served this church together for many years as well as later in life at the Lockhart Church of Christ and Bammel Church of Christ in Spring, Texas.

She worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for multiple companies in the Corpus Christi area including Cross Kieschnick & Company, CPAs. One of Davene’s greatest joys in life was avidly supporting all events performed by her children or grandchildren. Throughout her life, Davene had an abiding faith in God and a great love for family events, reunions, and gatherings of any sort that involved her beloved family.

Davene was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Mary Virden of Fredericksburg, Texas as well as brothers Wyman Virden, Garland Virden and sisters Opal Oehler, Thelma Townsend, and Dorothy Wares.

Davene is survived by her husband of 71 years Zane Rhyne of Spring, Texas, her son Darrel Rhyne and his wife Neta of Toyahvale, Texas, her daughter Mary Hyer and husband Walter of Gainesville, Florida, her daughter Venecia Arche and husband Lytle of Abilene, Texas, and son Michael Rhyne and wife Leigh of Spring, Texas. Her grandchildren, Josie Paquette (James), Tammie Rhyne, Zane Rhyne, Alek Hyer, Micah Branson (Allan), Lindsey Jung (Brandon), Adam Arche (Clair), Hunter Rhyne (Linsey), Ashlyn Rhyne, Taylor Rhyne, Carter Rhyne and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Martha Harrison and Sharon Gray, both of New Braunfels, Texas, brother-in-law Bill Rhyne (Peggy) of Mathis, Texas and many beloved nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be Thursday, January 9th at 11:00 am at Arlington Heights Church of Christ auditorium in Corpus Christi, Texas with a meal following at 12:00 in the fellowship hall. Funeral services will commence at 1:30 pm in the auditorium under the direction of Sawyer George Funeral Home with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
