After a four-year struggle with cancer, Carol Powick Cain transitioned to her heavenly home on July 16, 2017, in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 66. Mrs. Cain was born to Jean McIntosh Powick and George Robert Powick on December 3, 1950, in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, England. She was born at home in the same room as her older brother and arrived before the midwife. Her mother said she was in a hurry ever since. Her family immigrated to the United States in September of 1957, living in South Carolina and Georgia until 1969. Her struggles adjusting to life in her new country as a child guided her to a career in education. Aware that children may be dealing with all types of personal challenges outside of the classroom, she became a teacher who always strived to be an advocate for every student she had the honor of teaching. Mrs. Cain attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City as a ballet major. Although a fall from a drop stage ended her hopes for a career in dancing, she maintained a passion for dance all her life while living and working in Des Moines, Iowa, Manhattan, New York, and then Birmingham, Alabama. After working in advertising, she completed a degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating with honors. In 1976, she became a Christian and began a life journey of faith that carried her through both difficult and happy times. On January 28, 1983, she married John L. Cain, Sr. Living in Birmingham and then Cullman, Alabama, they shared a life of faithful growth, commitment, and enjoyed the blessings of many good and faithful people. They retired in Corpus Christi, Texas, to be near their daughter, Abigail Jean Hudgins. Mrs. Cain is survived by her husband of 34 years, John L. Cain, Sr.; five children and stepchildren: Gina Dale Ray, John L. Cain, Jr. (Kecia), Richard James Cain, Andrew Douglas Hurd (Robyn), and Abigail Jean Hudgins (David); her grandchildren: Oliver Ray (Kristy), Virginia Ray, Isabelle Cain, Adeline Cain, Daniel Cain, Horus Dee Hudgins, Rory Duncan Hurd, and Emily Mae Hurd; and one great grandchild, Calvin Ray; her brother, Wilson Roy Powick (Janice); brother-in-law, James Francis Cain (Mary Ann), and sister-in-law, Penny Cain. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Robert Lyle Cain and son-in-law, George Ray. Mrs. Cain leaves many relatives on both the Powick and McIntosh sides living in many places across the world, as well as many treasured friends. There will be a short graveside service at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 21, 2017 at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery. Please refrain from sending flowers or going to great expense to attend the funeral. Use your money to support a favorite charity or just take loved ones out for a meal, and remember her with fond memories. "I go to a calm place of peace and beauty."
