Billy Hugh Vansickle, age 90, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at River Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Bill was born on June 14, 1932 in Nady, Arkansas to Chester and Hattie Vansickle, the second of four children. Because he always managed to escape the house to follow brother Sonny to school daily, his teacher and parents decided to let him start first grade at the age of four rather than to retrieve him daily. After graduating high school, he attended Southern Arkansas University. He then entered military service, ending up in Corpus Christi, TX.
He met his wife of nearly 50 years, Sara, in Menomonie, WI while attending University of Wisconsin-Stout. As soon as she finished her degree, they were married and left the next morning for the long drive to Corpus Christi where he was employed as a vocational teacher at Tuloso Midway ISD. Bill then was employed at Calallen ISD in the Transportation Department.
Rain or shine, he never missed an opportunity to attend his children’s many sports, Ag and other school activities.
Grace United Methodist Church was his spiritual home for many years, where he served until his crippled hands could no longer hold the communion elements or bulletins, drive the van, unload the pumpkins, or complete the many other tasks he took on.
Bill spent many hours hunting, fishing, discovering arrowheads, gardening and tending the BBQ. A devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sara; three children Lisa (David), Chris (Sally), and Brad (Liz); nine grandchildren Allison, Tressa, Robert, Daniella, Brandon, Jordan, Emily, Jacob and Samantha; two great grandchildren, Theo and Owen. “adopted” son Israel and many friends and hunting buddies. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Hattie, brother Lee Gordon “Sonny”, and sisters Betty Joyce and Lula Jeanelle, Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 5th, at 10:00 a.m.
