Beverly Brock

Beverly Brock passed away November 24, 2013, after a short illness. She was a mother, companion and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. A long time resident of Calallen and the Corpus Christi area, she was a community organizer and leader who wrote the column "Miz Bev Says" for the Record Star for many years. She retired from Nueces County in 2007, as the director of Hilltop Community Center. Hilltop had been her vision for a center for the local non-profit groups and the local citizens to enjoy. Beverly was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Nancy Fridell Wells and Edward S. Wells on February 25, 1941. As a young child she and her mother moved to Reno, Nevada where she was raised. After 2 years in Peru where her stepfather worked she graduated from Reno High School. The years in Peru fostered her love of Spanish language and the Peruvian people. She attended San Francisco State College and University of Nevada where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in education with a minor in Spanish. She was one of the first Peace Corps volunteers, spending two years in Peru teaching English. Returning to the United States she taught Spanish at Reno High School before meeting and marrying David Brock from Tyler, Texas. She was married for sixteen years they had two children Toby Daniel and Amy Gail. Settling in Roman Forrest, Texas with her new family, she quickly became immersed in community activities. She started the local newspaper and was active in organizing a local government and New Neighbors League. Moving to Corpus Christi didn't stop her love of volunteering. When she and her husband settled in Calallen she quickly became a volunteer with the local PTO and Girl Scouts. While looking for a place for local Girl Scout troops to meet she discovered the old TB hospital. Working with the county commissioners she spearheaded the opening of Hilltop Community Center. She talked herself into a job that lasted 25 years. She continued volunteering in the Girl Scouts, serving on the Board of Directors and being a leader for adults and girls. She served as President for 6 years and as troop leader for Troop 123 until the girls graduated from high school. The last few years she had enjoyed retirement by spending time with family and friends, always surrounded by her beloved animals. She is survived by her long time companion Fran Pinckley, her children Toby (Pearl) Brock and Amy Brock and her grandchildren Nia Brock and Tabitha and Brock Bias all of Corpus Christi, Texas. Her sister Cathy Johnson and her husband Dr. David Johnson from Reno, Nevada. Memorial Services will be conducted on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel beginning at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at Hilltop Community Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Girl Scouts of South Texas, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
