Barbara Young Houmes passed away on April 18, 2023. She was born to Thomas A. and Mary Belle Wood on February 6, 1929 in Junction, Texas. She was the oldest of two daughters.
Her family relocated in Corpus Christi in 1940. Barbara attended the first six years of school in Junction and completed her education in Corpus Christi, graduating from Corpus Christi High School, now known as Roy Miller High school in 1946.
She went to Draughns Business College, studying general business management and full charge accounting.
In 1949 she was married to Lawrence W. Young. From this union, were born two daughters, Connie Gayle and Beverly Diane.
Barbara worked as a bookkeeper for Dr. Charles Clark, Sr. and later for Dr. Leonilo Garcia. She also worked for Dr. Dor W Brown, while living in Fredericksburg, Texas.
While working for Nueces Ford Tractor Company she became the Charter President of the Sparkling City Chapter for the American Business Women's Association in Corpus Christi.
Barbara's hobbies and interests included years of camping and water skiing, painting and delicate crochet projects.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lawrence Young, just short of 50 years of marriage, in 1998; daughter, Beverly Diane Garcia in 2003; granddaughter, Amanda June Reyes in 2007; daughter, Connie Gayle Jiminez in 2009; sister, Irma Nan Kuse in 2016.
Late in 2006, she married George E. Houmes of Sandia, Texas. They resided there in Carmel Hills at Lake Corpus Christi until it became necessary for them to move to a retirement community. George E. Houmes passed away on January 13, 2019.
Barbara was a long time member of the Arlington Heights Church of Christ.
Surviving is her grandson, Patrick Allen Garcia; two great-grandchildren, Francisco Martinez and Fabian Reyes; numberous nieces and nephews; her son-in-law, Ben Jimenez; one step-son, Dale “Chip” Houmes of Hoopeston, Illinois & step-daughter Gayle Rush of South Bethany, DE; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grand children and great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Billie Johnson, Kathy Snapka, and numerous others.
Visitation will be held at Sawyer-George Funeral home at 9am on Friday, April 21, 2023 and the Funeral service will follow at 10am, with burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery at 2pm.
Pallbearers: Don Stites, Bill Johnson, David Wittliff, Ben Jiminez, Fabian Reyes and Chip Houmes.
Honorary pallbearers: Edward Floyd, Dale Mathis, Johnny Reyes, David Lowry and Brian Charles.
