Barbara L. Clawson, a proud native of Corpus Christi and revered Nashville country music star, passed away on October 30,2024, in Corpus Christi, Texas, just days before her 89th birthday. Born on November 4, 1935, in Waco, Texas, Barbara brightened the lives of many with her incredible talent and loving spirit.
Barbara had a remarkable career, sharing the stage at the Grand Ole Opry with legends such as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Roy Clark, Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tex Ritter, and many others. In 1964, she opened a music store, where she began teaching guitar and later recorded records in Nashville. A gifted songwriter, she dazzled audiences on numerous TV shows and earned a star on the Texas Music Walk of Fame in June 2013.
More than her musical achievements, Barbara cherished her role as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was married to Bob Clawson in Reynosa, Mexico, in 1952, and together they built a life filled with love and devotion. Barbara’s proudest accomplishments included the birth of her son and the unwavering support of her husband, whom she described as her rock.
She leaves behind her son, Bubba Clawson, and her beloved grandchildren: Barbara Lene Clawson and her husband Frank Carrejo, Bobby Clawson and his wife Destinee, Joy Hendrix and her husband Dennis, Becky Burch and her husband Brandon, and Brandi Clawson, as well as eighteen cherished great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Violet A. Ritter and George C. Bowen.
A celebration of life and birthday will be held at Sawyer-George Funeral Home in Corpus Christi on November 4, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a graveside service at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery at 11:00 AM. Barbara will always be remembered as our star, whose love resonated through her family and her music.
