Anita Christina Burrus Schulz, 57, born on September 24, 1959 to Mary Virginia and David Alexander Burrus in Burlington, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home in Corpus Christi, Texas on the 9th of October, 2016 after a courageous 20 year battle with breast cancer. Anita passed away surrounded by her loving friends and family. Anita graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1978 where she excelled in the musical arts acting as the lead in several musicals including My Fair Lady, and several performances with the A cappela choir, the Purple Aires. Anita received a musical scholarship to the University of Iowa where she toured with the renowned Old Gold Singers and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in music in 1983. In June of 1983 Anita married her long time sweetheart Christopher Jon Schulz at the First Congregational Church in Burlington. Her son Kehr Charles was born in Corpus Christi in April of 1984. Anita served as choir director for the Lake Asbury United Methodist Church in Orange Park, Florida from 1986 to 1989. In April of 1988, her daughter Hannah was born in Orange Park, Florida. With gritty determination and resourcefulness Anita, as the wife of a Naval Officer, picked up her family and made a wonderful home for 3 years in Keflavik, Iceland where she became the choir director for the on-base Protestant services. 1993 found her reestablishing a home in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island, in the state of Washington. She fell in love with camping and exploring the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges. While her husband was deployed overseas she enriched her children's lives with frequent trips to Seattle's zoo, its museums, and the Mariners ball park. Never far from the Lord's service through music ministry, she served as the choir director at the Whidbey Presbyterian Church in 1995 and 1996. After a year in Newport, Rhode Island, Anita once again made her family a new home in Corpus Christi in 1999. In 2003 Anita received her Texas teaching credentials and began a 12 year career as the Fine Arts teacher for the Calallen School District elementary schools of Magee and Wood River where she received the district teacher of the year honors. From 2006 until June of 2016 Anita served the Lord as the Director of Music Ministry at Grace United Methodist Church in Calallen, with a brief sabbatical in 2009 to receive her Masters in Music Arts from Boston University. She was preceded in death by her dear father, David Alexander Burrus. Consummate wife, mother, and teacher, Anita will be fondly remembered by the many lives she enlightened with her optimism, compassion, and devotion to service to those around her. Always smiling, Anita's positive strength in the face of adversity has been an inspiration to all. She is survived by her husband Chris; children, Kehr Schulz (Mallory) of Houston, TX, and Hannah (Jacob) Weaver of Austin, TX; mother, Mary Virginia Burrus; sisters, Alicia Burrus (James Holschuh) , and Alexandra Burrus (Doug Abel). A memorial service will be held at 3 pm Sunday, October 16th at Grace United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, TX with future memorial services and interment at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Music Ministry at Grace United Methodist Church.
