Alton Robert Hutchinson (Hutch) passed away on January24, 2017 at 100 years of age in New Braunfels, where he resided for the past seven years. In 1916 he was born in Oshkosh, Nebraska to John and Abbie Hutchinson. After graduating from high school in Oshkosh at the age of 15, he studied chemical engineering at Chadron State Teachers College. After taking flying lessons while in Chadron, Hutch developed a love of flying. He joined the Marine Corp in 1942 and was involved in instructing pilots until he left active duty in 1946 as a Captain. For a brief time he had a crop dusting business and also managed the airport at Robstown. Hutch farmed in the area for over thirty-five years. After retiring from farming he worked as a rural mail carrier for almost twenty years. During his lifetime, Hutch enjoyed hunting, collecting paperweights, coins and playing bridge. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1062 for over 60 years. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Robstown. Hutch was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Carolyn; his parents; his sister, Shirley Mae; his brother, Norman. He is survived by his daughters, Carole Carlson (Kent) of Colorado Springs and Cindy Weise (Gary) of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Kyle Carlson of Colorado Springs and Ashley Cirac (Kyle) of Reno, Nevada. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at Robstown Cemetery following the visitation. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Rio Terra for all of the care, love and tenderness they gave Hutch and his daughters and to the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their comfort and care. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
