Alleta Nell Waters of Sinton, Texas passed away on November 7, 2024 at the age of 96. She was born in Itasca, Texas on April 9, 1928 to Luther J. and Verda Nell Brister. At the age of twelve, Alleta moved with her parents and her three younger siblings to Corpus Christi, Texas. A 1945 graduate of Corpus Christi High School, Alleta attended Del Mar Junior College where she met and fell in love with George Wilson Waters. They married on December 27, 1947 and soon moved to Lubbock, Texas where George continued his education at Texas Tech. Upon graduation, and after several subsequent moves, they returned to Corpus Christi. Alleta’s life revolved around the lives of her husband and their three children, the church, and the community. While living in Corpus Christi, she was active in PTA, First United Methodist Church youth ministry, Bible Study Fellowship, Circle-Up Squares Square Dancing, and many other activities.
In 1965, following a job change, the family moved to Sinton, Texas where Alleta continued her love of homemaking and service. Alleta was not only a mother to her own children but a “second mom” to many other kids in town as well. She and George were long time sponsors of Methodist Youth Fellowship and Youth Choir, and were involved in Lay Witness Missions and Walk to Emmaus. Along with a few close friends, Alleta helped found Crafty Ladies and an exercise class that continues to this day at Sinton UMC.
Some of her many talents and passions included singing in the church choir, playing the piano at home as well as at church during worship, cooking, artistic painting, and decorating. With George’s retirement, travel was added to the list as they toured the country in their RV along with occasional treks abroad, particularly to the Holy Land and to Europe. Alleta loved studying the Bible, perusing her cook books, and reading in general. She had an eye for all things beautiful as her home was a place of peace and joy. Anyone who visited was loved and welcomed. She utilized her many talents to make holidays and family gatherings unique, memorable, and fun.
Throughout her life, Alleta served the Lord. By living out her faith, others were encouraged to “grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18). Her life Bible verse was Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Preceding Alleta in death were her parents, her husband George, sisters, Joyce Smith (Stan) and LaJewel Srack (Bill), brother Eric Brister (Marilyn), son-in-law Brooks McIver, and many close friends, including her “El Grupo” friends. She is survived by her children, Julie McIver, Rebecca Nell Stalcup (Gary), and Bowen Waters (Melodie), and by her grandchildren, Annie Box (Brian), Saralyn McIver (Carlos de Santos), Lauren Gage (Andy), Travis Stalcup (Rachel), Leigh Worthley (Tom), Brenton Stalcup (Victoria), and Beth Wester, as well as by seventeen great grandchildren. Alleta also leaves behind her “forever friend,” Faye Harvin, and her dear friends, Estelle Hill and Anita Rogers.
Celebration of life will be held at Sinton United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm, November 23, 2024. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
