ADRC Robert B. “Bob” McKinley, USN (Ret.), 91, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015. Bob was born in Temple, Texas to Merrell D. McKinley and Julia Huckabee McKinley. He was raised in Nederland, Texas. Bob joined the Navy at age 17 in May, 1941. He served aboard the USS Enterprise CV-6 during WWII from Dec. 1941-Oct. 1943. From there he fulfilled various assignments and the last 7 years of his Navy career he was a flight engineer in the Military Air Transport Services. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after 22 years and moved his family back to Corpus Christi in 1963. Bob then went to work for the Prudential Insurance Company and retired from there after 16 years. Not slowing down he went to work for Dickson Builders for 6 years. Bob was a 32nd Degree Mason and was very active as a Shriner. He was an avid square and round dancer for many years and served as a volunteer guide aboard the USS Lexington for 20 years. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, and a brother, Joe Lee McKinley. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gwen; son, Roy McKinley of Dallas; daughters, Jamie Baglio of Virginia, Robbyn and son-in-law, Isdell “JR” Birnbaum of Corpus Christi; grandsons, Iz Birnbaum of Corpus Christi, Gabe Birnbaum of San Antonio, Garett Birnbaum of Houston, and Christopher Baglio of Virginia; two nieces and two nephews. Also surviving are his beloved cats Quatro and Callie and a host of extended family and friends. Bob’s ashes will be buried with full military honors on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 2 P.M. at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 10 A.M. at Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Al Amin Shrine or Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church.
